All-candidates meeting in Tyendinaga cancelled

BELLEVILLE – An all-candidates meeting scheduled to take place on the Tyendinaga Mohawk reserve on Wednesday has been cancelled after the People’s Party of Canada candidate Adam Gray received messages from community members telling him that the debate would receive opposition from the community.
Gray told QNet that he had received the messages on Oct. 2.
Gray says that he took the message with a grain of salt. He then informed the other candidates in the Hastings, Lennox and Addington riding about the message. He says someone in the Liberal party called territory chief Donald Maracle, who decided to cancel the event.
Gray says he never felt threatened but wanted everyone else to know what was said to him.
Tyendinaga police chief Jason Brant told QNet News that the messages were not violent, but rather alerted Gray that the Tyendinaga people would “prefer it not be there”.
Brant went on to say that these types of events have been hit or miss in the community but he is confident it will be rescheduled at another venue.
