Picton house blaze caused by electrical issues, fire chief says
BELLEVILLE – A two-storey house at 32 Talbot St. went up in flames yesterday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. due to electrical problems, Prince Edward Fire Department Chief Scott Manlow said today.
When the Prince Edward Fire Department arrived on the scene, there was heavy smoke and flames at the back of the house. Firefighters contained the flames. An investigation was conducted where it was determined electrical problems caused the fire.
The homeowners were away at the time of the fire.
A dog and two cats were lost in the blaze, the chief said. Concerned neighbours tried to save the animals before the fire department arrived onsite, but were unsuccessful, he said.
There was extensive smoke and water damage estimated at $250,000, he said.
One firefighter was taken to hospital by paramedics after the blaze for heat exhaustion, but was later released and is doing fine, Manlow said.
