Family mourns as 158th soldier killed in Aghanistan repatriated

  • November 3, 2011 at 11:51 am

By Amanda Monahan

The body of Master Corporal Byron Greff arrived back in Canada Tuesday afternoon at CFB Trenton.

Greff was killed Saturday in Kabul while travelling between headquarters and a training location in a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan.

The repatriation ceremony drew a small but patriotic crowd to show their support for the fallen soldier, his family and friends.

After laying flowers on his casket, his young son consoled his crying mother by rubbing her back while other family members laid their flowers before the trip down the Highway of Heroes.

The 28-year-old father of two was working with 16 others with the NATO training mission, in one of three attacks in Afghanistan on Saturday.

The deadly attack made him the 158th Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan since Canada’s involvement but the first since the combat mission was replaced by a training mission in July.
