BELLEVILLE – At Loyalist College, pub nights have been changed to Friday nights from the traditional Thursdays as of the school year that began this months.
The first Friday pub night was held last week. What did students think?
Second-year practical nursing student Alexis Blyth told QNet News that she drinks at pub, so Friday night is better because “I won’t have to stress about having class the next day or having assignments due, because they’d already be done.”
With the change to Fridays, “We can just relax, have a couple (of) drinks and have a good time with everyone,” Blyth said.
For others, this is their first time at Loyalist College, which gives them a first impression of the change.
Dalton Mitchell, a first-year students in the animation and game development program, said, “Having pub nights on Fridays (instead of) Thursdays allows students to have a bit more of a fun time and not worry about classes on Friday.”
Students who attend pub “are able to go home and not have to worry about waking up the next morning, letting them have a more fun time,” he added.
The president of Loyalist’s student government, Alicia Douglas, said the change to Friday night was made because “so many students are in class by at least 10 a.m. (Friday), and we were losing business” at Thursday pubs.
With the change, Douglas said, pub night has been busier and has had more students than toward the end of the last school year.
Another change this year is that pub-night themes are more interactive, she said. This week, for instance, there will be a carnival theme with cotton candy, special activities and prizes, so it won’t just be for dancing and drinking.
“That’s the direction we’re trying to go, and provide more services during the pub nights,” Douglas said.
Student government is always open to suggestions, she said, adding that there are suggestion boxes in the Link Lounge, the dining hall and the pub.
