PETERBOROUGH – Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau focused on climate change during a campaign stop in Peterborough on Thursday.
There was a huge outpouring of support for him. The line out front of the Evinrude Centre wrapped around the street corner with people coming to see him.
Trudeau emphasized climate change as the “challenge of our generation” and how his Liberal government was busy combatting it.
“Conservative politicians would rather jeopardize their kids’ future than stand up to big polluters,” he said to the crowd. “And while they waste taxpayer dollars fighting science, Liberals have been busy fighting climate change. Busy putting a price on pollution. Busy banning harmful plastics and phasing out coal. Busy protecting our oceans and our coasts. Busy investing in public transit, climate-resilient infrastructure and conservation.”
He reminded the crowd about the importance of the Canada Child Benefit which was one of the first things passed when the Liberals formed government in 2015 before announcing its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050.
He also said that there are plans to help workers prepare for the transition to clean energy.
“We’ll also help Canadians lower their energy bills, make their homes more efficient and give them more support to deal with extreme weather events. And we’ll cut corporate taxes in half for zero-emissions clean tech companies, so that Canada can lead in the clean tech market and fight climate change,” said Trudeau.
Amidst chants of “four more years” the 47-year-old candidate for the Liberal Party reminded the crowd that on Oct. 21., Canadians had a choice to make.
