SIU investigating shooting death of man in Stone Mills

BELLEVILLE – Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the police involved in the shooting death of a man northeast of Napanee on Tuesday evening.
The province’s police watchdog, which looks into cases where police-related death is involved, are investigating an incident where a 48-year-old man was shot by police in Stone Mills Township following an altercation with a resident in the area of Lake Road and County Road 14, just north of Camden Lake.
In a press release, the OPP reported at 6 p.m., the resident saw the man’s car in a ditch nearby and approached him, but left the area when the man said he had guns with him. The resident then called 911.
When OPP arrived at the scene, an officer “became involved in an interaction with the man,” the press release said. The officer fired his gun multiple times, striking the man multiple times, the release said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
