Quinte West holds rally to protest Lake Ontario water-levels plan
BELLEVILLE – The city of Quinte West and United Shoreline Ontario are holding a rally on Wednesday to protest the International Joint Commission’s Plan 2014, which they say is resulting in high water and flooding.
The IJC regulates water levels in bodies of water that lie between Canada and the United States, including Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Since Plan 2014 was adopted three years ago, water levels in Lake Ontario have reached record highs in 2017 and 2019. The high water has caused widespread flooding and property damage.
At the rally there will be discussion about the harm Plan 2014 is causing, what needs to happen and how it will continue to damage the shoreline, according to organizers.
“Join your neighbours and make your voice heard,” a poster circulated being widely circulated, including on social media, urges residents.
The rally will take place at the Duncan McDonald Community Gardens at 8 Couch Cres. in Trenton from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
