Loyalist students not keen on the Oscars, unlike their Gen Z peers
BELLEVILLE – Some Loyalist students say they are not excited by the upcoming Oscar awards, planned for early February, despite recent polls saying Generation Z represents a growing audience for the annual ceremony.
QNet News found in an informal survey of students at Loyalist College, they do not plan to watch the live broadcast of the event on Feb. 9. Many said they did not care at all about the Oscars.
The nominations were announced Monday with nine films up for the best picture award. Some of those movies are JoJo Rabbit, Joker and 1917.
Logan Drew, a student in the Architectural Technician program, said the Oscars really aren’t that big of a deal to him but are interesting regardless.
“I don’t honestly watch the Oscars. I did just recently watch the Golden Globes. But I do find it interesting, I like to see what films and what actresses get recognized after a year of watching movies,” he said.
In a poll created by QNetNews on Facebook, most people who voted seemed to agree with Drew. In the poll, five people indicated they will not be watching, while one voted by saying they would.
Monica Hutchings, a student in the Developmental Services Worker program, says she has never even watched the Oscars
“Ive never actually watched the Oscars. But I would check it out.”
Last year for the 91st academy awards CivicScience a real-time polling company polled people to find out how many would watch the Oscars or not.
The overall results showed that 82 percent of people were in the “Not at all likely” category to watch the Oscars while only 5 percent answered “Very likely”
But younger people bucked the trend.
As far as age groups are considered 33 percent of Generation Z respondents said they are “Very/Somewhat likely” to watch the awards while only 18 percent of millennials answered the same.
