Hospice Quinte has raised over half of fundraising goal for new hospice residence
BELLEVILLE – Quinte Hospice is over halfway done raising money for a new hospice residence.
In a press release Wednesday, Jennifer May-Anderson, executive director of Hospice Quinte, says the organization has raised 54 per cent of its $9.5 million goal and still has many more fundraising opportunities planned.
“We urgently need a hospice residence for the Quinte community,” May-Anderson is quoted as saying in the press release. “Last year 27 of our clients spent their last days in hospital, when they would have been eligible for a hospice residence. Five of our clients were forced to go outside of our community to receive end-of-life care in a hospice residence. With the success we have had so far in our fundraising efforts, Hospice Quinte is poised to fill this serious gap in palliative care in our community.”
In its first year the Hospice Quinte Care Centre expects to provide care to an estimated 183 palliative residents based on an average stay of three weeks. The Ontario Caregiver Association reports that for every palliative-care client, around five family members are also supported. That adds up to a total of 915 people per year who will benefit from the Hospice Care Centre, according to the statement.
“We are building much more than a house,” May-Anderson said. “We are building a mini-hospital.”
The Hospice Quinte Care Centre is expected to open in 2021.
