BELLEVILLE – The Quinte region is about to witness a significant addition to public transportation with the launch of the Rides on Demand app.
This new tool, developed through a collaboration between Quinte Transit and Loyalist College, aims to provide residents with a more flexible and accessible way to navigate their journeys, especially as Loyalist College students return for the fall semester.
Quinte Transit has connected the city of Quinte West to Loyalist College since August 2021. The app is intended to deepen that connection.
The Rides on Demand app, now available for download on Google Play and the Apple App Store, simplifies the ride-booking process for users. This app is particularly beneficial for individuals who have struggled with fixed transit schedules that don’t align with their needs. With the ability to book rides online, users can reach their destinations more efficiently, ensuring timely attendance at classes and placements.
Shelly Ackers, executive director of Quinte Transit, shared insights into the app’s development.
“For years, we’ve been looking to provide transportation options for those without access to regular transit routes, particularly individuals who cannot drive or afford a car,” she explained. The allows users to control their own ride scheduling without needing to call for assistance.
The app serves another purpose: it connects riders to transit points and expands transportation access for rural residents. By picking up users from their locations and directing them to key transit hubs, the app bridges the gap for those who previously faced difficulties accessing public transportation.
Using the app is straightforward. Users simply download it, register with basic information, and enter their pick-up and drop-off locations. They can choose to specify a pick-up time or request to arrive by a certain time, providing flexibility in their travel plans. The app allows bookings 30 minutes to two days in advance, enhancing convenience for users.
