Hastings County set to conduct Point-in-Time homeless count
BELLEVILLE – Hastings County is preparing to take part in the fourth nationally coordinated Point-in-Time (PiT) homeless count on October 7. This initiative is designed to assess homelessness across Canada, focusing on both sheltered and unsheltered populations within the county.
The PiT count will provide a crucial “snapshot” of homelessness in Hastings County, allowing officials to determine the minimum number of individuals experiencing homelessness on that specific day. Additionally, it will gather important demographic information, including age, gender, ethnicity, and veteran status.
From October 7 to November 7, an in-depth survey will be conducted to collect more detailed information from individuals experiencing homelessness. This survey is vital for understanding the needs and circumstances of these individuals, helping to inform local services and support systems.
In a news release, Warden Bob Mullin emphasized the importance of the PiT count. “
“It provides critical information to our Council and the community to understand the current scope of homelessness in our areas.” He expressed gratitude for the collaboration among Hastings County Community & Human Services staff, volunteers, and local agencies dedicated to executing the count.
The data collected from this count will be reported publicly and will be instrumental in improving responses to homelessness in the area. Future counts will help track progress toward the long-term goal of ending homelessness in Hastings County.
Hastings County has received support for this initiative from Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy, a program designed to assist communities in their efforts to reduce homelessness. The county serves as the lead agency for Coordinated Access, a system that organizes responses to homelessness and enhances housing outcomes.
Local service providers are committed to ensuring equitable access to housing and support services for those in need.
