By Harrison Perkins
The 12th Annual Fall Classic takes place Friday and Saturday in the Loyalist gym.
The lady Lancers defeated Algonquin Thunder 58-55. The Fanshawe Falcons, St. Lawrence Vikings from Kingston, Algoma Thunderbirds, and Champlain Cougars round out the rest of the teams taking part this weekend. St. Lawrence faces Champlain at 4 p.m., Fanshawe takes on Algonquin at 6 p.m. tonight, and Algoma plays St. Lawrence at 8 p.m.
Lady Lancers head coach Chris Eligh said the fall classic is a good way to see players skills early on in the season.
“This tournament is a good way to see kind of where we’re going to fit in”
“We have four returning teams from provincials with Algoma, Fanshawe and Algonquin and us, so it’s very competitive, should be a good tournament”
“It’s really just a test; it’s a good early tournament to get the girls ready”
“We were at Quebec last weekend, so we played four games in Quebec, the rookies surprised the hell out of me”.
“I expect big things of them this year, it’s a learning process,” said Eligh.
Rookie Lancer Alexandra Aguair said she’s excited about the season ahead.
“I was a little nervous at first just because of the teams we’re up against.”
“I’m excited for this year and I think it’s going to go really well” Aguair said.
Athletic Director Jim Buck said the fall classic is great for the players.
“They’ll get three games in this weekend and this time of year you want to play as much as you can” Buck said. The action continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. when Fanshawe faces Loyalist. Champlain play Algonquin at noon and then the final games will be at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
