A Belleville homeowner escaped a fire in his house Thursday morning by jumping from his second-storey window, said a fire investigator.
Lyle Quennell, fire prevention officer for the City of Belleville, said after jumping from his window, the man returned to the house to save his dog.
“He opened the back door and thankfully the dog ran through, somehow he had gotten out of his crate,” said Quennell.
Emergency services responded to the fire at a home on Herman St. in Belleville at around 7:15 a.m. and both owner and dog were okay, but visibly shaken.
David Young, a neighbour who lives at 19 Herman, said he was woken by his girlfriend just after 7 a.m.
“She woke me up and we saw that the wind was blowing our direction so we were concerned that the fire might our house too,” said Young. “ My girlfriend is out buying new fire alarms now just in case.”
