BELLEVILLE – Many local students are enjoying their first snow day of the season today after widespread bus cancellations.
There were a few other cancellations in the Quinte area, including adult-education classes in the Continuing On in Education program on William Street and a volleyball tournament at Quinte Secondary School, due to the snow.
Most main roads in the Belleville area were cleared by lunchtime, but police are still asking motorists to exercise caution as a result of the season’s first snowfall.
The Quinte area received about 10 centimetres of snow Tuesday night and Wednesday morning and, according to Environment Canada, could see more flurries this afternoon.
Emergency services were kept busy Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Police responded to several weather-related accidents, including a jack-knifed tractor-trailer on Highway 37 south of the Maple Dale Cheese factory.
Northumberland OPP responded to 12 motor-vehicle collisions between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
