BELLEVILLE – Loyalist College received a silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program for its Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre Wednesday.
The Canada Green Building Council awards the LEED certification. The award recognizes buildings that have energy-efficient design, construction and operation.
Daryl Kramp, the MP for Prince Edward-Hastings, attended the ceremony. He said that the quality of the centre was no surprise to him.
“I wasn’t shocked, because I’d been on the grounds evaluating … the proposal since it was conceived.”
Gary Goodyear, the federal minister of state for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, said he was amazed at the energy-efficient centre.
“It’s a beautiful space, lots of light – I wish I was in college right now. I’m surprised that it’s as beautiful as it is. It’s freezing outside but in here it’s a nice warm bright space,” he said.
The facility was built in 2010-11 with a $16.6 million investment from the provincial and federal governments.
