Quinte West to raise Franco-Ontarian Flag Thursday
By William Proulx
The Franco-Ontarian flag will be raised once again at city hall in Quinte West at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.
The flag was created in 1975 in order to represent French-speaking Ontarians. Raising the flag this year marks the 39th anniversary of its creation.
The flag-raise has become an annual event in Quinte West due to the location of CFB Trenton, and several French schools, which has attracted many francophone citizens to the Quinte area.
“We believe raising the flag gives our town a sort of a bilingual status” said Quinte West mayor John Williams.
Expected attendance Thursday includes, retired and active military, two French schools from the Quinte area and friends and family of the community.
The event will be open to the public.
