Local French school holds breakfast for a good cause

All of the donations went to the United Way of Quinte.

BELLEVILLE – L’École Élémentaire Catholique L’Envol held its annual charity breakfast Friday morning with all of the proceeds going to the United Way of Quinte.

For a minimal cost of $5, people enjoyed breakfast with the students, staff and parents at the elementary school between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

The Trenton-based French school has been hosting the event annually in the school’s gymnasium for the last seven years.

The small school has 177 students from the Trenton area.

The school’s goal was to raise $1,000 for the United Way – but exceeded that by raising $1,254.

School spokesperson Valérie Dubé-Hébert says the school has come up with other creative ways to raise money for the United Way. One was a crazy hair day where students paid a dollar to participate and wear a crazy hair-do to school. The other involved selling healthy snacks to people in the community.

Friday was also pyjama day at the school. Just like the breakfast itself, students who dressed in their pyjamas had to donate a dollar to the United Way.

“Most of the students and staff have ties to the (Canadian) military and live right on the Trenton base,” explained Dubé-Hébert.

Dubé-Hébert also said the breakfast gave them time to share and eat with their families before class. She said the school may be small, but its school spirit and positive attitude sets it apart from other schools.
