BELLEVILLE – A 20-year old man was confirmed dead after a vehicle collided with a transport truck on Highway 401 eastbound near Cobourg early Wednesday morning.
The deceased is Nethukan Thirunavukarasu, of Brampton, who was driving a small two-door honda at the time of his death, according to media reports.
Northumberland OPP say the accident occurred around 6 a.m. between Cobourg and Grafton. All eastbound lanes were shut down following the collision. Traffic was diverted north on County Road 45 to County Road 22, east to County Road 23 and south to Highway 401.
OPP Technical Traffic Collision investigators were on the scene throughout the day and the lanes were open again just before noon.
Closer to home, Belleville Police have seen an increase in demand thanks to the new winter weather. In a media release sent out Wednesday morning it said OPP have responded to over 40 calls within two days.
Officers were also confirmed to have investigated four motor vehicle collisions, all of which involving property damage. No injuries have been reported and only one driver was charged after failing to yield from a private driveway.
Temperatures are expected to drop throughout the week. Belleville Police request that motorists proceed with caution due to varying road conditions.
