Ladies’ night – no men allowed!
BELLEVILLE – The men are out and the ladies are in.
Every Wednesday night from 6 to 9 p.m., the Loyalist College fitness centre hosts ladies’ night.
This night started two years ago in response to a request from the student government, said Cory Mestre, fitness facilities coordinator at Loyalist.
“I think it’s a good service to offer as it provides an opportunity for more of the student body to become physically active, and strive to reach their fitness goals,” he said.
Loyalist student Leticia Lopez regularly attends these nights, and agrees that it’s beneficial.
“It gives women the opportunity to come into the gym and feel more comfortable,” said Lopez.
She also said it’s nice to have a night where the gym is not as crowded, so she can get in a good workout.
Another Loyalist student, Alysia Kefalas, said this night will help women start feeling more confident in the gym, so they can start working out on a more regular basis. She said this is especially important for those starting their new year’s resolutions to get fit.
However, on the first ladies’ night of the new year, there weren’t a lot of women taking advantage of the opportunity.
Loyalist College student Amber Young often works out on ladies’ night.
“I hope more women will come out to ladies night,” she said.
“The numbers this year, as with last year, started strong and then petered off as those ladies who did come just on Wednesdays, began making use of the gym on other days,” said Mestre.
He also says there haven’t been complaints from the men.
“Aside from some snark grumblings from a few guys, complaints from male members haven’t been an issue,” said Mestre. “Those who did grumble were infrequent users of the fitness centre, while all others simply work out in the remaining 85 plus hours of operation we offer throughout the week.”
Ladies night is offered during the first six weeks of the fall and winter semesters.
