Kevin Vickers named the new ambassador to Ireland
BELLEVILLE – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced the appointment of Kevin Vickers as Canada’s new ambassador to Ireland.
Vickers, House of Commons Sergeant-At-Arms, was hailed as a hero by the prime minister, other Canadians and international leaders for his actions in shooting gunman Michael Zehaf- Bibeau last October. Zehaf- Bibeau fatally shot Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a Canadian solider on ceremonial sentry duty, and then stormed Parliament Hill.
In a statement announcing Vickers’ appointment Thursday morning, Harper also commended him for his profound leadership and dedication to the security of Canada and its national institutions.
Harper explained Vickers’ experience and bravery will serve him well during his time in Ireland.
Vickers responded to his appointment by expressing his gratitude to all Canadians who support him and says he is humbled by the invitation.
His position will begin on Jan. 19.
