Be aware of scammers, police say
BELLEVILLE – The Belleville police are reminding residents to be aware of computer scammers trying to get their money.
Staff Sgt. Thomas Sweet says the scammers will phone your house and claim to be with Microsoft, trying to clear a virus in your computer. They will try to gain access to the computer and then ask for credit card information or a money transfer. They will even go as far as locking the computer if you don’t pay any money. The scammers may try to bill you anywhere from $100 to $1,000, Sweet said.
The police have been getting all kinds of calls about this fraud, which has been happening for years now, Sweet said.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, you should just hang up and ignore the call, he said.
Police ask that you do not provide any personal information and do not allow anyone to gain access to your computer.
