BELLEVILLE – A fundraising campaign to sponsor Syrian refugees has been launched through local churches in the Quinte region.
The Quinte West Ministerial Association is sponsoring a family and has the goal of raising $40,000 to support the family once they reach Canada. A total of over $6,000 has already been raised.
The Mennonite Central Committee, the organization that holds the formal sponsorship agreement with the federal government, has been working with the Association since October.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced yesterday that Canada will be accepting only women, children and families. This is a part of the Liberal government’s plan to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees into the country before the end of the year.
More to come.
