Universal Break is over for 2015
BELLEVILLE – This is the last week for Loyalist College’s Universal Break project for this year and students are looking forward to continuing participating in the activities.
Tracey Watson, the Universal Break co-ordinator, said that this is a unique project for Loyalist.
“This is a brand new initiative for Loyalist College,” she said. “This is the largest student engagement that we have launched. It has been a terrific success, and that success is attributed to the overwhelming response from student volunteers to help to facilitate, to promote and to engage to our universal break activities.”
Hand massages, badminton and lip-sync contests are just some of the events the college included in its Universal Break project this semester. The student government provided the Shark Tank for the open mic performances and movie screenings.
Many students volunteered at the Universal Break. Cecilia Tran, an Esthetics and Spa Management student, was one of them.
“I want to promote the program and let people know how great the program is. It is an opportunity for us to practise our skills and to meet people,” she said.
The break took place every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. and during this time all students were free from classes.
Watson said: “Our students want to be connected to each other, and it builds the community amongst the student body. They are able to come together, to have some fun to relieve a bit of stress. So when they return to (their studies) they are refreshed and feeling supported with the new friends they’d made through the Universal Break.”
Jillian Robinson, student government president, said the project will continue next semester.
“We are in the midst of organizing next semester. We are continuing with it but we are not too sure what we’re doing yet.”
Every student is encouraged to submit a proposal for events and activities to the Universal Break website.
