Bursaries available to Loyalist Students
The deadline to apply for bursaries is Jan. 22. Students can make an appointment in the Career Center with Joanne Farrell, who is the awards officer at Loyalist or students can go to www.myloyalist.com and apply for awards, bursaries and scholarships online.
The website is the only place where students can find out what awards, bursaries or scholarships they are eligible for and the application process takes about 10 to 20 minutes.
Farrell said approximately 1,100 students apply in the fall and up to 800 apply for the winter semester awards.
“Each year Loyalist College provides over 1 million dollars in financial assistance between awards, bursaries and scholarships. For a small college it’s pretty cool,” Farrell said.
If students are confused about the application process they can visit Farrell or the OSAP office. A group of student accounting students called Money Matters will also help with bursary applications.
Students who apply will find out mid-February if they are receiving a bursary, award or scholarship. There will be an award ceremony on March 3rd where money, awards or plaques will be presented.
Farrell said she does classroom visits to notify students about what money may be available to them.
“Sometimes I think students don’t think they are necessarily eligible because they receive OSAP, but we try to have all students apply for bursaries and most students are eligible, it is such a good process to go through to know what the application system is like,” she said.
“Apply! It’s free money,” she added.
Loyalist offers 150 bursaries between the fall and winter semesters. Students can visit national websites scholarshipcanada.com, studentawards.com and yconic.com where they can sign up and get notifications for bursaries or awards.
