Canada Revenue Agency fraud claims another victim
By Nick Ogden
BELLEVILLE –A Brighton man has fallen victim to the a scam where someone claims to be an agent from the Canada Revenue Agency.
The tax scam has been going on for a number of years.
Police say the man was contacted by the fraudster with the claim that he owed money on his taxes. The victim then purchased two pre-paid credit cards and provided the PINs of the cards to the con artist. The amount stolen was $980.00.
Police say the caller will say that the CRA demands payment immediately or an arrest warrant will be issued.
Northumberland OPP would like to remind the public to always verify with the Canada Revenue Agency the status of their income taxes prior to making any payments and to never give out personal information or make payments until you are certain you owe them.
