Students react to #BellLetsTalk phenomenon
BELLEVILLE – Students at Loyalist College who were aware of BellLetsTalk were supportive of the cause
Bell held its annual “Bell Lets Talk” day on Wednesday to promote mental health and raise awareness.
Bell donates five cents for every tweet using the hashtag BellLetsTalk and every text and call received with a Bell device.
Anyone using an iPhone or Blackberry must turn off iMessage and BBM in order for texts to count because Bell can’t track them on its network.
TJ Devries said he and his friends have their fair share of demons.
Devries said he’s dealt with anxiety and depression issues.
“It’s just a great way to bring awareness to the stigma and is just a great movement.” .
Devries also said he thinks there needs to be more support programs in this area.
“I feel like there needs to be more social programs in our area where people can reach out and get the help they need,” he said. “I feel like there’s not a whole lot of help in our area. I think it could be a lot better.”
First year Spa & Aesthetics student, Krysten Westover, said more light can be shed on this issue.
“I feel like it’s been in the dark for so long. So many people feel ashamed and having someone talk to you is very important.”
Jayden Jones was unaware of BellLetsTalk day. However, he says that it’s important to raise these issues.
“It’s all about trying to find a solution for mental health and make sure everyone gets the proper help that they need and realizing what the stigma is,” Jones said.
This is the sixth year Bell has hosted this fundraiser. It’s raised more than $100 million since its inception. If you want to donate, all you have to do is use the hashtag #BellLetsTalk on Twitter and share the BellLet’sTalk photo on Facebook all day Wednesday.
