Possible changes to the Trenton farmers market
By Haley Rose
BELLEVILLE – The Front Street farmers market in Trenton could see some changes soon.
These could include shorter hours – changing from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. to 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. – and opening the market Wednesdays and Saturdays instead of Thursdays and Saturdays. The vendors have also asked to be allowed to sell processed and cooked foods in addition to produce.
Christina Edwards-Scott, the economic-development co-ordinator for Quinte West, said the changes were proposed last October when Quinte West hosted a farmers market wrap-up celebration.
“We give vendors who just finished their market season an opportunity to provide feedback,” Edwards-Scott told QNet News Tuesday. “It is important to get their feedback because they are living it, working it and hearing what their customers are asking for. If we don’t know what we don’t know, we can’t fix it.”
During the October meeting it was the vendors who proposed the changes, she said.
The request for having one more day between market days is so the farmers will have an extra day for growing and harvesting their crops, Edwards-Scott said. The request for a later opening time is because the vendors found there was little traffic at 7 a.m., she added.
The recommendation will go to Quinte West council on March 7. If passed, the changes will take effect on May 7, opening day for the market.
