BELLEVILLE – The Hastings Prince Edward and District School Board and the Canadian Union for Public Employees local 1022 have reached a tentative agreement on a new deal.
That came after more than 200 members of the local branch and their supporters rallied outside the school board’s headquarters an hour before the board’s meeting on Tuesday night. They were there to bring attention to the fact the local, which represents secretaries, education assistants, maintenance workers and custodians, has not been able to settle a new contract with the board for 19 months. If they had not managed to reach a settlement last night they would have entered into a work-to-rule, said Pat Nielson, the executive for the local branch.
Kelly-Anne McMillan, the secretary at Parkdale Public School, described what would have happened to her work if there had been a work-to-rule.
“It would be, like, the photocopying of the newsletter and the printing of the newsletter. The supply teachers and putting that in the system. I would stick to doing my attendance and that is it.”
The news about the tentative deal was tweeted out by CUPE just after midnight.

The ratification meeting for the new contract will be held on April 2nd.
