OPP warning people to be aware of scam
By Martin Allen
BELLEVILLE – Central Hastings OPP is warning people of a credit card scam circulating in the area.
The scam works like this : A caller, pretending to be from a bank, says your bank or credit information has been compromised. The scammer then asks the victim to confirm information such as social insurance number and credit card information. The calls are often made in the morning or evening to catch the victim off guard.
The OPP says these tips may help protect people from scams like this:
- Call your bank or credit card company to verify anything the scammer tells you.
- A caller who creates a sense of urgency or pressures you is a common tactic for scammers.
- Never give out your personal information over the phone.
This scam follows a similar one that went through the area last month on social media.
You can go to the OPP’s anti-fraud website for more information or phone 1-888-495-8501.
