Belleville recognized with bronze award at annual Ontario Bike summit
BELLEVILLE – The city of Belleville has been recognized with a bronze award at the Ontario Bike Summit.
The Share the Road Cycling Coalition announced the latest Bicycle Friendly Communities Awards for Ontario on Tuesday.
Communities ranging in size from nearly 600,000 residents to just under 11,000 are being recognized.
Jamie Stuckless, executive director of Share the Road says the growth of the Bicycle Friendly Communities program is reflective of increasing interest in cycling among municipalities in Ontario.
“Whether it’s a large urban area or a small rural town, people want to live in vibrant communities that allow them to be active and have safe transportation choices”, says Stuckless in a news release.
In the same news release, Councillor Egerton Boyce says the award speaks to the commitment of council and the dedication of city staff and community groups to making cycling a priority in Belleville.
In its seven year history the Bicycle Friendly Communities program has awarded two gold awards, seven silver and 30 bronze. The Bicycle Friendly Community has yet to award any diamond or platinum awards.
