The Gongshow player of the month proved his award was well deserved.
Before Fridays game against the Cobour Cougars, Wellington Dukes forward Darcy Murphy was awarded with the Gongshow player of the month for his outstanding performance tallying 16 goals and 13 assists.
Murphy called his award meaningful.
“It’s pretty good, I mean there’s a lot of good players in this league so it really means a lot to me,”
Murphy proved he deserved the award after recording four assists in the Dukes 6-1 win over the cougars on Friday.
The stellar play of Tyler Marble and goals by Mitch McNeill and Elliot Richardson gave the Dukes a two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
The Dukes were once again first on the board in the second period with a power play goal by Anthony Taylor but midway through the period Marble’s nearly 60 min shut out streak ended with a goal by Colbie Andrews.
Guillaume Naud scored the Dukes fourth goal of the game late in the second to extend their lead to 4-1. With a hefty lead heading into the third Jeff Foster, Assistance Coach for the Dukes made sure his team kept composure to avoid getting to confident.
“We just try and stay positive on the bench and try and make sure guys don’t get ahead of themselves, just push pucks deep and make sure we play defensive hockey,” he said.
Cole Bolton and Cam Yuill kept the streak going of two goals a period to finish the game with a 6-1 win over the Cougars. This game was especially important for the Dukes as there was some unfinished business left from their previous meeting where the Cougars embarrassed the Dukes on their home turf 8-4.
“We owed them one. They kind of beat up on us pretty good in Cobourg last time we played them and our guys were really excited coming into tonight’s game so they were looking forward to playing and you know what they played great,” said Foster.
“We’ve had a couple new pick ups lately and we’ve been practicing really well so I think the way we had it, we were coming in, we knew we could beat these guys. It’s a big two points for us which gets us close to them in the standings,” said Murphy.
The win over the Cougars brings their win streak to four games and it was their final home game until December 2 when they face Peterborough.
