Loyalist students, how do they cope?

Kyle Vesh is a second-year Electrical Engineering student at Loyalist. Since the beginning of the school year he has spent a lot of his free time working out at the gym. This lifestyle requires him to constantly be refueling his body with not only enough, but also the right kinds of nutrients. Here's a few of his thoughts on healthy eating and managing a diet.

Where do you eat most of your meals around the school? How much do you normally spend on groceries per week? Are you funded by OSAP? Can you describe your weekly exercise routine? How big of a role do supplements and protein mixes play in your diet? Have you noticed that your routine affects your schoolwork? How easily do you think it would be to eat healthy without your expensive routine and funding? Do you ever eat at the cafeteria? Any advice for students trying to eat healthy on a budget?

Matt Maxwell is a second-year community and justice service working student at Loyalist. Similar to Vesh, he spends a lot of his time exercising and working out. Maxwell however enjoys the simpler things in life and tends to stick to a consistent meal plan.

He says he learned that simple, bulk foods keep you going and can still taste great.
“I like to stock up on spaghetti and meat,” he explains. “I can buy a pack of noodles that’ll last me a few weeks, and there’s usually some chicken or pork chops on sale.”
Maxwell commonly shops at the local No Frills grocery store.

“It’s got decent selection, and if you grab a flier on the way in you’re guaranteed to find some deals. For the most part I’ll pick up the same kinds of foods, and grab some luxuries when they’re cheap.”

Maxwell is also very active and spends a lot of his time at the gym. His meal plan may be basic, but he says he fills the gaps with workout supplements, gummy frogs and hot lips.
